Clifford Kimbrel-Dunn (1982, Sandpoint, ID, USA) is a flutist/composer living in
Seattle. Clifford received his first flute (with a curved headjoint
because he was so small) at the age of six. Within a couple of years,
Clifford was performing his first compositions for his family.
Upon
his graduation from high school, Clifford went immediately to Central
Washington University where his focus was in flute performance with
instruction by Dr. Hal Ott. During this time, Clifford began formal
studies in composition with Dr. Mark Polishook. The composition study
triggered a new awakening for Clifford as he became drawn to the
avant-garde. He began putting all his energy into extended flute
techniques and using them for performance as well as composition.
When Clifford finished his bachelor's degree in flute performance
(2003), he stayed at CWU to finish a master's degree in music
composition (2004). During this time, Clifford was commissioned by
the Brannen Brothers Flutemakers to compose a piece specifically for
the Kingma-System flute. This became the basis for his master's work.
In
the summer of 2004, Clifford moved to Amsterdam to study with the
flutist/composer Anne LaBerge. From this point, Clifford's performing
focus has been on combining the flute with a computer to create an
augmented instrument. He received his Masters of Music from the
Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht school of Kunst Media en
Technologie in the summer of 2007.
Clifford
has studied with and been in masterclasses with many of the most
prominent flutists including: Anne LaBerge, Hal Ott, Robert Dick,
Matthias Ziegler, Wil Offermans, Felix Skowronek, and Paul Taub. He
has also studied composition with: Mark Polishook, David Asplin, Eric
Flesher, and David Dramm. Furthermore, Clifford has worked
extensively with electronic musicians including: Hans Timmermans,
Jorrit Tamminga, Jan Trutzchler, and Marcel Wierckx.
Clifford
plays on an expanded Kingma-System flute made by the Brannen Brothers
Flutemakers. He alternates between using a Sheridan headjoint as well
as two wooden headjoints built by Felix Skowronek.
