The
flute has been my primary tool for making music since the beginning
of my musical life. At the age of six, I began playing the flute and
shortly learned that it was an instrument mostly used by girls. This
knowledge made me feel like an outsider in the realm of flute playing
until I learned that most of the most well-known flutists in the
world were men.
Perhaps
being a continual outsider of the flute world pushed me down a path
less followed: being a performer/composer and specialising in
extended flute techniques.
It
was the study of composition that sent me down this path. Going to my
university music library and listening to 20th
and 21st
century music first exposed me to other instruments making
non-traditional sounds in musical ways inspired me to find out what
sounds could be made with the flute. This led to the discovery and
devotion to extended flute techniques.
As
a flutist, I am an improviser, composer, and performer of new music.
I've worked with many young and old composers and have premièred
music written for the flute. I am always interested in receiving new
scores for the flute (particularly for flute and electronics) and
would be happy to work with composers interested in expanding their
understanding of the capabilities of the flute.
